YouCanSpell

YouCanSpell is a simple iPhone spelling game for primary school children. I originally wrote it for my children who astonishingly find computers and iPhones more fun than learning to spell.

YCS currently includes more than 250 high frequency words split into 3 groups: Reception, Years 1,2 and 3, and Years 4&5, although these are only guides and not limitations.

Spellings have to be typed in to progress, and retention is good.

I've found that my boys compete with each other to spell the most words correctly.

The words are spoken and a sentence is read out to give each word a context

How it works

The first screen you make any selections on is this one, where you choose the year group you're going to try:

Each year group contains a lot of words, so the next screen lets you select where in the list you're going to start. Here the words are divided into groups of 5. The game will automatically take you to where you left off each time so this is only relevant for starting a new game:

When you've selected a group the game starts, and you will, assuming you've turned your sound up, hear a word, a context sentence, and the word again. At that point a keyboard will appear for you to type your answer in:

'Repeat' and 'Submit' are fairly self explanatory I think. Pressing 'Pass' spells and displays the word for you, but then it's hidden when the keyboard comes out so you have to remember it before you can type it in.

will bring up a page of information, a link to this site and an email link to me.

reminds you to turn your sound on.

lets you start a new game.

VERY IMPORTANT! Please make sure you have predictive text switched off

Settings>General>Keyboard>Auto-correction:OFF

or iPhone will obligingly attempt to give you the answer!

That's about it I think, but don't hesitate to let me know what you think, whatever that might be, and how you get on. Facebook and Twitter links are at the top of this page.
